Seeing double
Over 30 years of fighting elections, this week’s Westminster poll represented my most dramatic result ever — doubling the vote since the last Westminster outing and recording the highest-ever Sinn Féin result in south Belfast.
But in this case, it wasn’t enough to secure the seat. Nevertheless I am buoyed by the support I won from right across South Belfast, from people of every creed, colour and background.
The Homeric efforts of my campaign team buoyed us up throughout a marathon campaign but ultimately, with many people voting tactically to keep out the DUP, the victory and the congratulations go to Dr Alasdair McDonnell.
I am convinced that I will continue to build on this firm base of 5,402 votes in the time ahead and that the momentum is firmly with those who believe in a better and shared Belfast.
My thanks to all, from every art and part, who expressed support for my campaign and a special go raibh maith agaibh to those who put an ‘X’ by my name yesterday. I will ensure your trust in me is vindicated in the time ahead.
So let’s fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith.
Go dté sibh slán.
